Finish Friday - It's About Time

I'm Being "out of commission" for most of February has put me behind where I want to be by now with my projects for this year.  When I started off this week, I had three UFOs on my desk.  Hubby's Family Guy quilt, the Valentine's Day vests for my DJ's, and the Bionic Bag for my BFF.

Well.... I got two of the three done this week.  Not too shabby if you ask me.

Bionic Bag for the BFF

As I stated in my post from earlier this week, thank GOD for the video tutorial I found on YouTube for this little bag!  I don't think I would have been able to complete it without it!  I bookmarked the link, so for the next one(s) I've got planned, it'll be an easy reference for me.  I'm sure that after I get a couple done, it'll be easy-peasy... but until then, I'm grateful for the help!

Bionic Bag Details:

  • Started: February 26, 2015     Finished: March 2, 2015
  • Pattern:  Bionic Gear Bag by Sally Thompson
  • Fabric: Novelty & Keepsake Calico fabric from JoAnn's, Pellon SF101 Interfacing
  • Notions: 4 - 9" zippers and 1 - 22" zipper from Wawak.com
  • Thread: Coats & Clark - Pink All-Purpose Thread

Valentine's Day Vests for the DJ's

These were intended to be worn on Valentine's Day by my DJ guys, but alas... life got in the way and I didn't get them done in time.  Hubby ended up not DJing that night anyways because we were headed to PA for my grandmother's funeral, but that's besides the point.  I wanted to get them 100% done so that they will be ready to wear for next year, plus two less items on my UFO list!

Valentine's Day Vests Details:

  • Started: February 5, 2015     Finished: March 5, 2015
  • Pattern:  McCall's Pattern M2447 - Sizes XL & XXL
  • Fabric: Valentine's Day Fabric, County Classic Solids (lining), and Costume Satin (Backing) from JoAnn's
  • Notions: 5 - 5/8" Buttons & Tie Buckle from JoAnn's
  • Thread: Coats & Clark - Black All-Purpose Thread
I've still got Hubby's Family Guy Quilt to finish, but it's going to have to stay in the UFO pile for a little while longer.  My DJ guys are going to be MC'ing a St. Patrick's Day party on the 13th and they want St. Patrick's Day vests to wear.  I've had the stuff for months, but now it's crunch time to get them done in time.  With any luck, they'll both be done by the end of this weekend, and then I'll be able to tackle finishing up on the quilt.  As of today, we've only "technically" got 14 days left until spring, and I'd like Hubby to be able to somewhat enjoy it this year.  Lol.

Hope everyone is having a fabulous Friday, and has a great weekend to come!

AWOL!

Wow, did February get away from me!  I can't believe it's already March!!!  The past five weeks have been the most emotional and trying weeks I've had in a long time....

Towards the end of January I got slammed with the flu.  Hit me like a ton of bricks and completely knocked me down for a few days.  Then, just as I was starting to feel better, round #2 started.  Unfortunately, it was that strand of flu that knocks you flat and between the upset stomach and the fatigue... I didn't get out of bed for days.

Then, on February 12th I lost my dear grandmother.

She survived the open-heart surgery back in December and was on her way to a full recovery when...WHAM!  She gets hit with the flu while in the nursing home which turned into pneumonia.  Such a shocker, especially seeing as though they were talking about sending her home. We spent a few days in PA with my family for the funeral, which turned into some of the hardest days of my life.  I was very close with my grandma, and now there feels like such a void in my life.  I don't think it's really hit me yet, but I'm sure it will here soon.

As soon as we got back from PA, I was hit (yet again) with some kind of bug that knocked me down again.  I think it was a combo of being around so many people for a few days, plus being physically and emotionally drained that did me in.  Finally was feeling a bit better by the weekend, and spent two days cleaning my house.  It had been in shambles for going on three weeks due to being sick and then having to go out of town.  It was in DIRE need of a good scrubbing!

That weekend I also had to finish Hubby's scarf for Comic Con.

He and a group of his friends went to the Cleveland Comic Con and of course they had to dress up!  Well, it was only him and one of his gal-pals, but they had a blast!  The "Gru" scarf was simple enough to do, just took a little bit.  Stephanie is a dead ringer for "Lucy" from Despicable Me 2!!  They said they had a ton of people stopping them and asking for photos.  Lol!  I managed to finish the scarf in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, but it was done in time for them to leave at 10 am the same day.

The past week or so has been crazy at work which has left me exhausted by the time I get home.  This past weekend totally got away from me and I didn't get anywhere near what I wanted to do done.  I did manage, however, to get the Bionic Gear Bag started for my BFF.

I'm not going to lie, I was a bit intimidated to do this one, especially after seeing that the instructions were over 80 pages long!!!  I did find an awesome tutorial on YouTube of a gal demonstrating the construction of the bag from start to finish.  It was a total life saver! The bag is sitting at about 95% done, just have the main outer zipper to finish and it'll be done.  I had every intention of finishing it up on Saturday, but the day just slipped away and I never got around to it.  That's my goal for tonight is to finish it up so it can be packaged and mailed off to her by the end of the week :D

Also on the list to finish up this week....

  1. Finish the Valentine's Day vests I started for Hubby and & DJ partner - I know it's past Valentine's Day, but I don't want to leave these as a UFO until next year.  Better to get them done and off the list.  Just have one to finish the side seams on, and then both need buttons & buttonholes.
  2. Finish Hubby's Family Guy Quilt -  This sucker has been sitting on my work desk for weeks... just needing quilted.  I am DETERMINED to get this done this weekend!  I think I'm just going to keep the quilting simple for now so it can get done.  With any luck, it'll be ready to hand-bind by the end of the weekend.
Well, that's it for me for now.  Sorry again for abandoning you again!  I would say it won't happen again, but unfortunately.... I can't make any promises.  Lol.

Finish Friday: Side Projects

Wowzers!  Been a minute since I posted... Sorry!!  Guess my "New Years Resolution" to post more frequently isn't going so well. Lol.

I have been a busy little bee though. Cranked out a couple of small projects, even though Hubby's "Family Guy" quilt is sitting.... Basted and ready to quilt. I think subconsciously I keep putting it off because I still don't have a "plan" for quilting yet. I'm vowing to get to it this weekend though.... I'd like to get this done before spring and Hubby can actually use it before next winter!!  Lol

Finish #1 (& 2) - "Rock Legends"Button-Down Shirts (x2) for Hubby and his DJ-ing partner

There are actually 2 shirts in this pic, but really all you can see is one.  Hubby picked out this fabric from Fabric.com called "Rock Legends Musical Skulls."  Quite appropriate for them seeing as its skulls with headphones :)  This makes shirts numbered #7 & 8 that I've made so far.  Getting so good at these that I don't even need the directions anymore!

Rock Legends Shirt Details:

  • Started: January 9, 2015     Finished: January 20, 2015
  • Pattern:  McCall's M2149
  • Fabric: Rock Legends Musical Skulls
  • Notions: 4 - 3/4" Black Buttons
  • Thread: Coats & Clark - Black All-Purpose Thread

 Finish #3 - Wall Organizer

I stumbled upon a gal's blog called Fort Worth Fabric Studio and checked out all her awesome tutorials.  Saw this adorable wall organizer and knew right away I needed to make one :-)  While at what has become my weekly pilgrimage to JoAnn's last Friday, I picked up the fabrics for this to match my kitchen.  Came together so easy, I thought I was doing something wrong... Lol.  I even used "Pearl" to do some embroidery on it.  Used the Viking 6D Communicator software to use a font off of my PC on my embroidery machine.  So incredibly proud of myself for that one... Ha ha ha.  I know it's not centered, and at first I couldn't figure out why.  But after a post over on one of the Facebook groups I belong to, I found out that there is an official top and bottom of the inner hoop for the machine, and the little arrows need to match.  Whoops!  Didn't know that!  Wasn't too big of a deal considering it's just for me, but now I know for future reference :-)

Wall Organizer Details:

I've also got a crochet WIP going too....  Like I don't have enough projects on my plate as it is.  Lol.

I found this kit over at Herrschners for their Baby Bright Scallops Blanket that I though was absolutely adorable!  Considering I've got a yarn stash that looks more like a yarn store... I figured instead of buying the kit, I'd use something I already had.  The pattern was pretty easy to figure out, and once I got done digging thru all my tubs to find something to make it with... I was ready to go.  I've got a girlfriend expecting #4 this weekend, and thought the colors would work well for her.  This is boy #3, and they're totally not the fru-fru baby colors types.  I was hoping to get it done before "Baby J" makes his arrival, but it's taking me a lot longer than I thought it would.  I haven't crocheted anything in YEARS, but it really is like riding a bike, so I picked it back up with no problem.  I just can only manage to get 1-2 color rows done a night before I start going cross-eyed and have to put it down for the evening.  Got the last 6-7 episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show to watch, so maybe I'll plop down at some point this weekend and get some work done on it.

Hope everyone has had a wonderful week, and have a great weekend to come!

WIP Wednesday: First Project of 2015!

With having all my WIPs done and getting my room moved... I couldn't wait to get started on a new project.  Only one problem... I couldn't decide on which one.  Lol.  Too many on the list to choose from, and honestly it became overwhelming to even think about it.  I didn't sew one single stitch from the Tuesday before Christmas to this past weekend.  I was starting to get antsy, but just couldn't settle on a project to start.  Should I start the wall-hanging I want to do?  Or the quilt for my mom?  Or the quilt for my living room?  The decision making was driving me nuts!  I finally just decided to just stick my hand into my project tub and just pick one.... so that's what I did.

The winner is......

"Family Guy" Quilt for the Hubby!!!

I bought these fat quarters some time ago from the Fat Quarter Shop when they had them as their daily flash sale.  I bought two of the FQ bundles and I think they were only around $12 each!!  I grabbed two because I had no clue what I was going to do with them yet and I wanted to make sure I had enough.  Thankfully I did as they're not available on their site anymore :(

The pattern is "Jack's Blocks" by A Bright Corner and I got it off of Craftsy.  I needed a pattern that would allow for the large prints in this set, and this one fit the bill nicely.  I had to make some modifications for the cutting as I had about double the prints than the pattern called for.  I just kinda winged it and started cutting the blocks as they fit.

I used some black County Classic Solids I got from JoAnns.  Hubby chose red for the binding, so I grabbed some of that while I was there.

Started cutting this one out on Saturday, and by Saturday night... I already had two rows complete :-)

The top was done by Sunday night, and basted by Monday night.

Now it's time to figure out how to quilt this baby.  Hubby requested yellow thread for the quilting.. but that's as far as I've gotten.  Can't really do my habitual "echo quilting" on this one as most of the blocks are too big.  Thinking I may just do either a large meandering or stipple.. but I'm not sure.  Haven't FMQ'ed anything without a stencil so far, so I may need to practice a bit before I attempt it on this one.

It's in the single-digits here in NE Ohio, so I'm hoping to get this one finished up this weekend so Hubby can enjoy it while relaxing on the couch!

Santa Baby

Santa was VERY good to me this year!!  He definitely got wind of my new "obsession," and brought me plenty of new toys!

First up.... my gifts from my "Secret Santa."

My immediate family decided a few years ago that instead of everyone exchanging gifts, that we would do a "Secret Santa."  Each person would only have one person to buy for.  There is a $100 limit on store-bought gifts, and each person has to do a handmade gift.  Fortunately for me, my "Secret Santa" was my mom this year.... meaning she actually knew what the items on my wish list actually were.  Lol!

Mom got me the Martelli ErgoCutter, Skini-Mini Rulers Set, Individual Block Templates w/Fussy Cut Windows - Sizes 5.5" and 7.5", and Measure Cuts Scissors.  I also got two of the feet I wanted for my Viking machines... the Free Motion Echo Quilting foot and the Left Edge Top Stitch Foot.  Then, my parents still fill our stockings with little things, and this year I also go two rolls of Sulky stabilizer :-)  I'm so lucky to have had a crafty "Secret Santa."

Next up.... gift from the in-laws.

My MIL must have called Hubby and asked what I wanted for Christmas.  They got me the Queen-Sized Supreme Slider that I also had on my wish list.  She had no clue what it even was... so I know Hubby must have told her I wanted one.  Lol.  I have the smaller version of it and I love it.  It just is a little bit on the small side when it comes to doing larger quilts.  Now I've got both sizes and am prepared for anything!

Finally.... my gifts from Hubby a.k.a "Santa".

He got me all the organization stuff I had on my wishlist from Michaels.  We moved my craft room during our break from work (both of us were off work the week between Christmas and New Years) and I really wanted a pegboard to put by my cutting table to hold all my goodies.  Now it's just a matter of getting Hubby to actually put them up for me :-)

I was totally SHOCKED when I opened up the last present....

Not only does he pay attention when I talk, but must have a super memory to remember that I really wanted an Open Toe Free Motion Quilting Foot AND also the Do-It-All Quilter's Hoop for my embroidery machine!

LOTS of new goodies to play with... and now that my room is moved (post with pics later this week), I've got no excuse not to get in and play with them!

Hope everyone is having a terrific Tuesday!

2015 Already?!?!

Wow!  I can't believe we're already into 2015!!  The past few months have been such a whirlwind and went by so quickly.... I was having a hard time trying to keep up!  I've got a LOT I want to share.... finished Christmas gifts, what Santa brought me, details of "Operation: Rosie Needs A Bigger Craft Room," as well as my first project for 2015.  I honestly started writing posts, but then got side tracked and never finished them :-(

That being said.... I'm going to do all my updating over the next few days and then ** hopefully ** get back on track with future posts :-)

Update #1: Finished Christmas 2014 Gifts

Total of 8 quilts in a little less than 6 months!  Not too shabby.... especially for a "newbie" like myself.  All quilts were done, washed, labeled, and wrapped by Christmas Eve!  It was a race to the finish line, but they all made it in time.  Some of them I've already shared, but there were the final couple that haven't been posted yet.

Phew..... I'm getting tired again just thinking about all that!  Lots of hard work, hand-binding, cursing (lol), and hand-cramping (from snipping all those seams)... but it was totally worth it!  I even put "Pearl" thru the ringer and made matching labels for all of them.

I used some of the leftover fabrics from the fronts of the quilts and added borders around them.  Spent two nights hand-sewing them to the backs of the quilts... and they were all ready to go! I honestly kinda impressed myself with all of this... they all turned out well, AND they were all done in time!

Well, that's it for my first update for 2015 :-)  I'll be back with more in the days to come.  Stay tuned.....

The Story of "Pearl"

First off, I want to apologize (again) for being MIA for so long!  Things have been NUTS at Chez Rosie, and I just haven't had a chance to sit down and write a post :(

Today, I'm taking a break from showing pics of my WIPs or finished projects (yes, I do have quite a few ready to share... just need pics) to tell you a story.  It's a story that starts back almost 9 years ago.... (WARNING.... Long post ahead..)

Back in 2006, I lost my job as a Merchandising Assistant at the corporate OfficeMax headquarters.  I had worked my way up thru the company, starting at the bottom as a CopyMax associate when I was 16... all the way up to corporate.  9 years with the company!  They were bought by Boise Cascade and were relocating to Chicago.  They offered for me to move, but I just couldn't do it, especially because I had just gotten married and my new Hubby would have to move out there without a job.  So... I took the voluntary lay-off.  With that came 10 months of severance pay, and 9 months of a "retention bonus" for working until the last day.  I was sad to go, seeing as though it was all I knew, but also excited for the future.

About two weeks before my last day, I decided I was going to spend a little of my hard-earned retention bonus on something for myself.  Off to a local sewing machine store I went.  After spending way too long in the store, I finally settled on a gently used, Brother PC-6500.  The nice thing when you buy a used machine from this shop is that they include EVERYTHING that was traded in with the machine.  All little bits and bobs that are extra, the memory cards of designs, plus all the hoops that would have needed to be purchased separately.  I made out like a bandit.  Loaded her into my car, and away I went.  The next weeks were spent acquiring supplies, (thread, stabilizer, designs, things to embroider, etc.), and then as soon as my last day came, I was ready to get to crafting!

I put her thru a workout!  Everything from onesies, to baby blankets, to totebags and sweatshirts.... if it didn't move, I embroidered it!  I was having a ball!  So much so, that I begged my mom to come over and check it out.

Mom came by a few days later after work, and at first thought I was nuts for spending so much money on a machine just to do embroidery on.  However, she quickly changed her mind once she saw how it worked and how easy it was!  The next thing I know, she's asking me to embroider things for her... eventually getting to the point of where she wants one too!

Fast forward a few months to November of that year.  Mom and Dad were out Black Friday shopping and happened to stop into the Viking dealer in our local JoAnn's store.  It was there that she fell in love..... A Husqvarna Viking Designer SE.  Knowing my mom, she got a killer deal on her (especially on Black Friday).  She couldn't wait to tell me, so she called me as soon as she got home to brag ;-)  Jealous wasn't even the word for it..... Her new "baby" had so many features that my Brother didn't have, it was so quiet and did such a beautiful job.... I was green with envy.  Since that day, many years ago, I made her promise that she would leave me her embroidery machine in her will and I would inherit it when she died (my sister wouldn't even know what it was... so there would have been no objection from her.. lol).

Now, over the past few years.... my already old machine got older.  She started being temperamental and sometimes more of a pain to deal with than she was worth.  I packed her up and put her away in the closet.  All my supplies, I gave to my mom.  I hoped that one day I would be able to take her in to the repair shop and have her looked at, but with it being almost an hour away... I never made it there.

Back in April when I made the Survivor Rag Quilt for my mother-in-law, I wanted to do a bit of embroidery on it.  Initially, I was going to just head on over to mom's house to do it, but then I figured it wouldn't hurt to try it on mine first.  If it didn't work out, I had a backup plan.  So... I got her out of the closet and dusted her off.  Mom had given me back some of my supplies for me to use, so I got some fabric all hooped up, loaded up the design, said a prayer, and hit the "Start" button....

I was pleasantly surprised... she didn't do too bad!  I managed to get all the embroidered squares done for the quilt with no issues!  However, being done with my project, I put her back in the closet for the time being.  I didn't have any embroidery projects coming up, so there was no immediate need.  She still doesn't handle very intricate designs very well, and breaks threads constantly.

Fast forward now to last week... Tuesday to be exact.  It was the day I turned the big 3-3.  I usually despise my birthday and beg everyone not go go overboard with things.  No gifts, no big fuss... just a call or text to wish me Happy Birthday is fine by me.  I should have known better to know that my family NEVER listens and they do what they want anyways.  On Monday, I got a call from my mom, asking if we could come by on Tuesday night.  They wanted to see me for my birthday.  Now... not two weeks prior, she had called and asked if we could just do my birthday (that was on the 25th) and her birthday (that was on the 29th) together when we went out to dinner on Saturday night.  I was totally fine with that!  Now, she wants to throw a curve ball at me... demanding I stop over on Tuesday night.  Fine....

Hubby and I pulled in their driveway Tuesday night, thinking it would be in-and-out in an hour.  WRONG!  In the driveway was my sister and BIL's car... which means it wasn't just a little something.  I put my big girl panties on and dealt with it.  After some play time with my adorable niece, Miss L, it was time for cake.  We weren't even thru cutting the cake and my mom insisted we started opening gifts.  GIFTS?!?!?!?

See, about two years ago, we decided that we weren't going to be doing birthday/anniversary/mother's day/father's day gifts anymore.  Just a card... and that was perfect!  So, I opened the awesome card from my sister, and then my mom shoved a gift bag in front of me.  Opened the card, and it was from my mom & dad.  In the gift bag was a shipping box.  Opened the box and inside was a great Nancy Zieman book she found for me... along with two spiral bound books.  I looked at the covers and they read "Owner's Manual" and "Owner's Handbook."  Perplexed, I continued opening the rest of the stuff in the gift bag.  It was a little bundle that included what looked like a power cord and a software CD.  Ok, now I'm totally confused!  I hear "Happy Birthday Rosie" from behind me.  It was my dad, holding something wrapped in one of those decorated garbage bag kinda things.  He put it down on the table infront of me, and I eagerly opened it up..... It was a Designer SE.... just like hers!!!

"Pearl" - My new-to-me Viking Designer SE
Not only did I burst into tears, but I practically tackled my mom with the biggest hug I think I've ever given anyone!  As I calmed myself down and got to inspecting my new "baby."  On the manuals and on the boxes for the hoops, it had my mom's name written on them...... WHAT?!?!  I asked her if this was her machine, and she put her head down and nodded.  I started crying... AGAIN!!!  I just couldn't believe it!!!

So, I asked her what she was going to do now without a machine.  She just looked at me.  I asked her if she got a new machine too (seeing as though her 60th birthday was on Saturday, it was a possibility)... she just put her head down and nodded.  Immediately I started grilling her about it, and she confessed... she got the Husqvarna Viking Diamond Royale!!!! Holy cow is that thing amazing!

But... that is the story as to how "Pearl" came into my life.  My mom could have traded her in towards her new machine... but she knew how much I wanted her and she wanted her to go to a new, loving home.  I am truly blessed to have such wonderfully supportive family.  My mom is the reason I know how to sew.  She has taught me (almost) everything I know... and I owe my passion for creating things to her.  She is my biggest cheerleader, with my Hubby and my Dad being next in line.  I just can't believe what a lucky girl I am!

Gave "Pearl" a quick workout the other night and did a quilt label.  I'm a little out of practice with reading the color change sheets, but I'll get back in the swing of things in no time!  Ordered some supplies from Amazon, and I was off and running!  I can't wait to use her to make all my quilt labels for the Christmas gifts, and then I have a couple special projects to work on after the holidays... one being a nice wall-hanging for my sewing room.  I can't wait!

Sorry for the long-winded post.  I've been meaning to write this up for the past week, I just haven't had a chance.  Stay tuned for more adventures with "Pearl" and to see what I've been doing with "Rosie."  My "girls" have been and will continue to be busy, busy, busy.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic Friday, and have a great weekend to come!
